FRESNO - Mike Ruiz had no idea the higher-ups at the U.S. Olympic Training Center were keeping an
eye on his every punch.
After just three years in the sport, the 20-year-old southpaw from Fresno has impressed USA BOXING -
the governing body behind the U. S. Olympic Boxing Team -- so much that he's been chosen to compete
against Great Britain in October.
Through USA BOXING, national coaches carefully choose competitors to represent the United States in
international competitions, such as the Olympic Games.
Ruiz, a 112- pound flyweight, finished third and earned a bronze medal at the U. S. Men's Nationals in
Denver last June. He lost to eventual winner Louie Byrd.
He is also the second -ranked amateur in the nation, another reason why his father, Mike Ruiz, Sr. ,
received the official call from the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,Colorado.
"They asked from where does your son want to fly out of?' And they gave him a first-class ticket out of
Fresno, " said Riuz, Sr., a commercial roofer. "He was all excited about going for the training."
Upon his arrival, Mike went throught orientation to learn the rules of the facility and the work ethic involved,
including anti-doping masures and a daily curfew....
